Spitsbergen East Coast Dogsled

This expedition takes you deep into the wilderness. It will give you a great taste of the Arctic wildlife. This is for adventurers keen on getting to know dog sledging and Svalbard. Join us through wide valleys, over glaciers and over mountain passes to the remote East coast.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Monday
08.00 The guide will pick you up at your accommodation.
We start to prepare for the expedition, go through safety instructions and routines, prepare the sleds, and get to know the dogs. After lunch we harness the dogs and start our expedition, heading for the enormous area south-east of Longyearbyen where snowmobiles are not allowed.

Each member is allocated their own team of 5-6 dogs. We start out through the scenic valleys Bolterdalen and Tverrdalen to reach the wide Reindalen where we set up the first camp. During the first day we take the time to familiarise ourselves with the dogs and the equipment. All participants are requested to participate in setting up the camp and feeding the dogs. After an unforgettable day we snuggle up in our sleeping bags while the dogs surrounding camp and keep watch for polar bears.

Day 2 - Tuesday
The day starts with a solid breakfast before we pack down the camp. Our journey continues through the magnificent landscape, with only the sound of our sleds on the snow, just like the early polar explorers. The route goes through Reindalen and Lundstrømdalen towards the thrilling east coast, and the feeling of freedom will soon fill each of us. By the late afternoon we find a campsite for the night, and you will notice that you are already getting the hang of the end of day routines.

Day 3 to 4 - Wednesday to Thursday
On the east coast we have a good chance of seeing ringed seals and “the King of the Arctic”, the polar bear. From the east coast the expedition continues across majestic glaciers, through huge valleys and past magnificent mountain scenery. Your dog-sledding abilities will develop rapidly over this time, and you will come to appreciate our four-legged friends for the way they work, and see how affectionate these strong and mighty dogs. By the end of the day we arrive at our last campsite.

Day 5 - Friday
In the afternoon/early evening we will reach the kennel, welcomed by the howling dogs. After six fantastic days it is time to say goodbye to your four-legged friends.

Be aware that weather and snow conditions may affect our expedition and we may be delayed back to Longyearbyen.

  • All times are subject to change.
  • The travel schedule will be altered should the weather conditions deem it necessary.
  • The tempo of the expedition will be adapted to the conditions and the participant’s physical strength.
