Spitsbergen Trekking

Spitsbergen Trekking is a five day nature experience, walking among rising peaks and mighty glaciers, with a camp site next to the Svea glacier in Ekmanfjorden, in the west of Spitsbergen.

Itenerary Ultimate Trekking

In the afternoon we are transported to our camp in Ekmanfjorden in open Polarcirkel boats. We cross Isfjorden before proceeding further into Nordfjorden towards Ekmanfjorden. This area of Svalbard is recognised as being one of the most lush and boasts a rich variety of species. This gives us a unique nature experience, as well as excellent opportunities for a wide range of trekking alternatives. Ekmanfjorden is part of the Nordre Isfjorden National Park, and many places we can study cultural remnants from both mining and exploration, as well as from hunting and trappers life.

The Spitsbergen Trekking tours are lead by our most experienced tour leaders. The camp is equipped with large communal tents for meals and group activities (or even for drying clothes), and smaller tents where we sleep. There are no paths or roads where we go hiking. The terrain is rocky, wild, untouched and beautiful! Every day we can choose between a short and a long walk. We can stroll along the picturesque coves and islets, or along the lush beach plains. We can climb ice, walk on the glacier or go for a hike in the Lappdalen valley, in Haugsmarka or on Bertilryggen, or we can enjoy the superb view from the mountain Mediumfjellet. Leaving the camp for our daily hikes, we carry only small backpacks. We don't have to worry about the weight, or any sore shoulders!

We walk in small groups, together with our knowledgeable local guide who carries all necessary safety equipment. The terrain is marvelous, and living in the camp intensifies the feeling of freedom and our connection to the Arctic.

After five days and four nights in our camp at 78° north, we're transported back to Longyearbyen in the Polarcirkel boats.

How demanding is Spitsbergen Trekking?

You need to be in good physical condition for the Spitsbergen Ultimate Trekking. We prefer participants that are fairly trained hikers, i.e. that you have done longer mountain hikes, and that you know that you can manage hikes for 7-10 hours in alpine and rugged terrain.

If you have experience in overnight in small tents this is also an advantage (but not necessary). You must be aware that the weather can change quickly and that the hikes are over rugged terrain without paths.

Day-by-day programme

Day 1 - Friday
09:00 Pick up at your hotel. Briefing, preparations and packing of equipment, before the tour starts.
14:00 Transport with Polarcirkel boats to the camp in Ekmanfjorden.

Day 2 to 4 - Saturday to Monday
Camping and hiking in the Ekmanfjorden area. The area offers the possibility of hiking on the glacier, as well as a wide range of interesting trekking routes, both long and short. The campsite is surrounded by beautiful, scenic views, located next to the fjord, between the mountains and in front of the glaciers.

We keep the same base camp during the trekking expedition, meaning that we always return here to sleep and prepare our meals.

Packed lunch will be prepared each morning, and we find a sheltered place to eat lunch while on our treks.

Day 5 - Tuesday
Pick up by Polarcirkel boats in the early afternoon, and transport back to Longyearbyen.

  • All times are subject to change.
  • The travel schedule will be altered should the weather conditions deem it necessary.
  • The tempo of the expedition will be adapted to the conditions and the participant’s physical strength.
