Spitsbergen Summer Ski Expedition

In the course of 13 days we cover a distance of 200 kilometres through Svalbard’s ostentatious wilderness. Prepare to sweat it out. Silence. Lack of civilisation. And maybe something big ... like a different outlook on life?

In arctic exile

Forget about tap water, showers, bedding, luxury and comfort. This is our longest and most demanding excursion.  For two tough, but rewarding weeks, you will experience an incredibly beautiful but also a brutally desolate landscape whilst skiing across Spitsbergen.

From boat to glacier
Having safely arrived at Gravneset the skiing expedition sets off by climbing Brokebreen (750 metres).

Overwhelming surroundings
The rewards are many as we journey south. We will be crossing the large glacier plateaus of the Monaco breen and Holtedalsfonna (900 metres) and ski through the Kongsvegpasset 850 metres above sea level. From the summit of Tre Kroner you can take in the impressive view of Kongsfjorden.

Return by Polarcircle boats
Continuing south, crossing several smaller glaciers and passes, we begin to approach the end of the expedition - Ymerbukta.  In Ymerbukta we will probably find that the snow line has withdrawn and we’ll have to take our skis off and walk the last bit down to the shoreline.

The Skiing expedition ends on Saturday morning. After spending 2 weeks in the north-western wilderness of Spitsbergen, our Polarcircle boats will bring us back to civilization. Safely back in Longyearbyen we take a well deserved shower. A splendid evening meal rounds off the expedition.

The expedition leader carries the necessary safety and special equipment. Other personal equipment such as cooking utensils, clothes and tent you pack in your sled. The weather can change quickly so participants need to be in good physical conditions and used to sleeping in tents in winter. This time of year the midnight sun shines providing daylight in the night time allowing us to utilise all hours of the day if we want to.

How demanding is Spitsbergen Summer Ski Expedition

This tour requires that you are in good condition and strong enough to go on relatively long treks carrying a rucksack or pulling the sled loaded with all your equipment. You must be prepared for the weather to change very quickly, and also be prepared for some very harsh weather conditions.
