Barentsburg - the Russian Outpost

Barentsburg is the second largest settlement on Svalbard, with about 500 inhabitants, almost entirely Russians and Ukrainians.

Russian hunters and fishermen have inhabited Svalbard for centuries. Graves and other evidence of their pressence have been found there.

The settlement of Barentsburg rely on coal mining. The Russian-owned Arktikugol has been mining coal here since 1932. The settlement have a museum, sports centre including a pool.

Barentsburg are self-suffient with vegetables (from a green-house) and milk (from a cowhouse).
