New adventures every day

We begin with a night in Longyearbyen, where we meet our guide and complete our final preparations. On day 2 we board MS Nordstjernen, and head first to Russian Barentsburg. We spend the weekend exploring the north-west corner by ship, before arriving in Krossfjord, where we will say good bye to the comforts of the ship and begin our paddling adventure.

Here we will spend 8 days making our way around the fjord, finding a new campsite each day and really make the most of the area by kayak and on foot. From the spectacular Tinayre Glacier to hunters cabins and the legendary Lloyds Hotel, each day will offer something new. We will have all of our equipment with us, and be self-sufficient during this expedition - just like the original polar explorers.

After this week in the untouched wilderness it will be strange to re-board MS Nordstjernen and return to Longyearbyen; but be sure, all thos on board will be all ears to hear about our adventures in the Arctic wilderness!

Day to day program

Day 1

The guide will meet you in the reception of Coal Miners’ Cabins at 10am. Our guide can collect you from another hotel by prior arrangement. At Coal Miners’ Cabins there will be a welcome meeting where you will be able to meet everyone, tent teams will be divided, a discussion on what to expect and a review of the map. Following this, you will join the guide to our storeroom where we will go over equipment for the trip, test the tents and the Primus stoves, look at the provisions and find the sizes for our dry suits. It will be possible at this time to make adjustments / changes in regards of equipment, tent teams and food for the trip. When we are finished packing, those who would like to can join the guide for a hike to the top of Plateau Mountain. This is a great hike and provides a fantastic view of Adventfjorden and parts of Isfjorden. Dinner is arranged when you would like to eat. Accommodation at Coal Miners’ Cabins is included.

Day 2

Breakfast is served at Coal Miners’ Cabins from 7 – 8.30am. Check out from the hotel is 8.30am. At 9am we will collect you for a sightseeing trip of Longyearbyen. Here you will have the opportunity to visit the Museum and the galleries. The sightseeing ends at the port 12pm ready for boarding and checking in on the M/S Nordstjernen. Lunch is served on the way to Barentsburg. We arrive in Barentsburg at 4pm. There will be arranged sightseeing and the possibility to see a local Russian show. We depart from Barentsburg at 6.30pm after which dinner will be served onboard. During the night the ship will sail North towards Liefdefjorden.

Day 3

We arrive in Liefdefjorden. We travel to Monaccobreen (the Monacco Glacier) where we will have the opportunity to disembark. Sailing to 80 degrees north and a visit to the walrus island “Moffen”.

Day 4

Breakfast is served onboard and we are dropped off next to Lilliehökbreen. The adventure is now underway! We will paddle along the bay and possibly camp by Signehamna. Remember to bring clean clothes that can be left on M/S Nordstjernen – it’s always nice to have a fresh set of clothes when you come back from an expedition.

Day 4 - 10

We kayak in Liiliehökfjorden and cross the fjord to Cadiopynten Fuglejell (Bird Mountain). The journey continues in Möllerfjordenopp to Lloyds Hotel. We can paddle into all of the scenic bays on the west side of the fjord. Here there are varied landscapes with many great glacial fronts. We continue paddling to the west of Möllerfjorden to Krossfjorden. How far we go on the trip is dependent on weather, wind, currents and your own wishes. We aim for the July 14th glacier. If the conditions are good, we will make it round and into the inlet behind Blomstrandhalvøya in Kongsfjorden.

Day 11

The last day of kayaking. In the afternoon, before dinner, we will be collected by M/S Nordstjernen. We allow ourselves a warm shower and will enjoy a farewell dinner in the ship’s restaurant. After dinner there will be a chance to disembark in Ny-Ålesund with a guided tour of the town.

Day 12

Breakfast is served. We are onboard the M/S Nordstjernen and can look back on an absolutely fantastic trip. We arrive in Longyearbyen around 10am. There will be transport provided to the town or to the airport for departures.

All times are subject to change. The expedition schedule will be altered should the weather conditions deem it necessary. The tempo of the expedition will be adapted to the conditions and the participant's physical strength.

How demanding is Ultimate Kayak Expedition?

This trip requires the participants to be physically fit (no back, neck, arm or wrist problems), and previous paddling experience is an advantage. You must be aware that the weather can change quickly, and that the sea might be relative rough due to the wind and waves. Temperature in the water is around 2-4 °C.

We use both single kayaks and steady double kayaks on this expedition. There are a set number of kayaks, so participants must be prepared to alternate between paddling single and double. Our guides are experienced kayak paddlers and will at all times ensure the groups safety.  If the weather is difficult we will go trekking in the beautiful area surrounding the camps.

Participants will be asked to assist with the polar bear watch during the night.
