Backcountry Ski Expedition

Untouched ski terrain and a warm lodge in the Svalbard backcountry - join us for 3 days of exhilarating skiing in amazing ski terrain.

Raw Arctic Nature

Spitsbergen Lodge

This is a three day adventure in varied terrain with a lot of possibilities. We will use snowmobiles to make our way to the lodge, and they can also help us get closer to the mountains we will attempt to master. We will stay in comfort at the lodge, surrounded by the raw Arctic nature and never-ending opportunities for fantastic downhill skiing. The group will be accompanied by an experienced guide who will be responsible for safety.

The Lodge

Spitsbergen Lodge innendørs

The Expeditionion Lodge sleeps a maximum of 10 guests, and provides a sheltered and comfortable base for exploring the Nordenskiöld Land area. The lodge is well located in the pass between the valleys Adventdalen and Eskerdalen, and boasts great views towards the Drønnbre-massif and Skolten, the highest mountain on Nordenskiöld Land (1.28 m). The lodge is warm and welcoming, with facilities including a living room, kitchen, 3 bedrooms and toilet. Electricity is supplied by generator.

Backcountry skiing in the Arctic

Spitsbergen Lodge Topptur

Vi vil bruke fjellene i indre deler av Adventdalen med sidedaler. Området har fjell på opptil 1100 meter - Skolten er et av disse fjellene vi kan gå til - mens de fleste toppene ligger på ca 700-900 meters høyde. Her finner vi lett tilgjengelige fjell i alle varianter. Fra alpine nedkjøringer, til slakere, åpne flanker - perfekte for store svinger! Den arktiske villmarka er vårt hvite lerret, og vi nærmer oss med respekt. Ut fra vær, føre og eventyrlyst velger vi neste dags område.

Skills, fitness and expectations

Skills

Skiing in isolated areas requires a certain level of skill from the participants to ensure the expedition is conducted in a safe and secure way. All participants must be used to skiing outside of prepared slopes. The participants must only ski to their own limits and follow the guide's instructions at all times.

Fitness

The daily stages will vary, and will be adjusted to the snow and weather conditions, as well as the participants' desires and requests. We will generally be up at 700 - 1000 metres above sea level each day. We can set up round trips, and/or master several peaks during the same stage. The climbs will be at a relatively easy tempo to enjoy the surroundings and save energy for the descents. All participants must be familiar with climbing peaks with equipment.

Expectations

Three days in the lodge with like-minded people gives you a fantastic opportunity for adventure. The guide will ensure that the participants experience great skiing in safety. The goal for the expedition is safe skiing which will show you Svalbard at its best. Plus, we will always be hunting for the best snow!

Itinerary

Day 1

The guide will meet you and you will have a briefing and the final preparations will be made. There will be time for last minute shopping. Departure around 11 am. We will aim for an afternoon trip to become familiar with the area.

Day 3

We will spend the whole day on skis. Arrival in Longyearbyen at 6:00 pm.

For this expedition you need skiing equipment which is suited to the conditions. That means alpine touring skis (randonée) or strong Telemark equipment. Splitbord can also be appropriate if you are well-used to using it. Snowboard and snow shoes are not recommended, and neither are alpine skis with walking adapters (alpine trekkers).

Equipment should have been tested prior to the expedition, but not damaged. Personal safety equipment such as shovel, search probe and sender / receiver tranceiver are mandatory.

Skis Width 83-95mm is recommended due to weight and snow conditions.
Bindings Tech bindings are recommended.
Poles Preferably light adjustable poles with medium-large baskets.
