In four days we will ski from the west coast to the east coast of Spitsbergen. This is an Arctic adventure over 50 kilometers in an amazing area on Svalbard.
Day 1 - Thursday10:00 am - we start the day with an expedition briefing, preparation and packing for the expedition. We will go through gear and instructions for how to use the cooking gear, sled, ski equipment, tent, food and drinks.During the afternoon we will be transported from Longyearbyen to Tempelfjorden by snowmobiles. This transportation leg is approximately 65 km. We begin our ski adventure Tempelfjorden where we will head east towards the Von Post Glacier where we make camp for the first night.Day 2 - FridayThe expedition continues up a large glacier and we reach 650 metres above sea level at a mountain pass. From here, we head to our second campsite on the Hayes Glacier.During the journey east, we will be on large glaciers where we will se beautiful nunataks such as Panoramabreget and Skinnluva rice high from the glacier.Day 3 - SaturdayThis leg takes us down the Hayes glacier and we will make camp for the last time by the Königsberg Glacier. If we are lucky, we will see the king of the Arctic, the polar bear, hunting seal on the sea ice.Day 4 - SundayOn the last day, we will meet sea ice in Mohnbukta and follow the coast until we reach Georg Bjørne’s old trapper cabin. Here we will be met by the snowmobiles that will take us back to Longyearbyen. All times are subject to change. The travel schedule will be altered should the weather conditions deem it necessary. The tempo of the expedition will be adapted to the conditions and the participant’s physical strength.
This expedition requires the participants to be physically fit, as we cover 10 - 15 km every day pulling sleds with our equipment. This is however one of our shorter ski expeditions, and is a good introduction to ski expeditions in the Arctic.
Every participant should be an experienced skier and be familiar with camping outdoors in tents during winter. Please note that weather on Svalbard is unpredictable. Wind and temperature can change quickly. We form two team who will each get a sled. The sleds have equipment such as tents, portable stoves, food and fuel for everyone for the whole trip. The sleds weigh about 20 kg each. In addition you will have your personal equipment which can be carried in a backpack or packed in a sled. Participants are expected to help setting up camp, cooking and do a polar bear watch if this is necessary due to our geographical location.
