Take a northern lights holiday on Spitsbergen, where the Polar winter gives you exceptional chances of seeing the natural fireworks of the Arctic.
Located just 800 miles from the North Pole, Spitsbergen is the largest of the Svalbard Islands. The aurora borealis is seen here more often than in any other inhabited place. It's also the only place on the planet where you can experience the northern lights during daytime!
In Svalbard due to the polar nights, we can see dayside Aurora. This is Northern Lights that occur during the day! Typical features of the dayside aurora is that they are less intense than nightside aurora. This is because the particles that enter directly are slow and have less energy, than those coming in from the nightside. The dayside aurora appears green to the naked eye, but in reality it is red. However, the human eye is much less sensitive to red than green light, so seing the red light with the naked eye is very rare. Cameras, on the other hand, can capture it!
The magical aurora - a unique display of light, ever changing, ever fascinating. Named for the Greek goddess of dawn, Aurora, the northern lights have long been a source for myth and legend, and today attract many visitors to the Polar regions. To learn more about the aurora check out our Aurora Borealis information page.
