Coal Miners' Cabins is located at the foot of the mountains, at the top of the Longyear Valley. It is a perfect base for trips on foot, skiing or snowmobiling, and is great value for money. You'll find Coal Miners' Bar & Grill here, offering juicy burgers and a good atmosphere. The hotel has recently been refurbished and is today a cool hangout place for both tourists and locals. There are private rooms with shared bathrooms in the hallway, and perfect for those who want to spend their money on adventures instead of accommodation.
When the polar summer begins on the 17th of May, the midnight sun has already illuminated the island for a month. 24 hours of daylight allows for the island's sights to be explored and experienced day and night. There is no limit to when you can go exploring, and it's easy become jetlagged – even if you haven’t crossed a time zone. At the same time, this offers unprecedented opportunities for a jam-packed holiday!
The summer in the Arctic is short and hectic, and there is a booming animal- and birdlife on the archipelago. Although the number of nesting birds does not exceed 30, birdlife is rich. They come in large flocks to nest and eat of the vast deposits of nutritious organisms in the ocean during the summer months.
The wildlife is no less impressive. Whales, seals and walrusses enter the fjords of Svalbard to feast of the food opportunities in the ocean. And on land you can see the chubby Svalbard reindeer, polar fox, polar grouse and - if you are lucky - polar bear!
