Row & hike to Sneheim - an authentic adventure

Rowboats have been used on Svalbard since the early 1900s, when the hardy hunters used them to visit their stations and move pelts and supplies from place to place.

Rowing and hiking

On this tour we will use modern row boats, but still feel like Arctic pioneers as we cross the Advenfjord. Two or three people will be in each boat, with a guide in a separate boat for safety reasons.

The trip across the fjord is around 3 kilometres, before we arrive at the abandoned settlement of Hiorthhamn. From here we will take the steep and stony path up to the entrance to the mine "Sneheim", at 582 m. The climb is a challenge suited to the fit, but views from the mine entrance are formidable. As we explore the remaining buildings the guide will share the history of the mine and the area, and we will enjoy a light lunch and drinks.

This is a fantastic trip for the explorer who wishes to see Svalbard in a new yet authentic way. Participants should be fit, but do not require rowing experience.

Practical information

All participants must dress in warm, windproof clothes. We recommend shell layers that are waterproof, windproof and breathable. An innerlayer of wool is also recommended. Bring a backpack with extra clothing, such as gloves and a hat, as well as any personal equipment. Solid, strong hiking boots is a requirement.
